About the Artist

Nick Bamford is an undergraduate student here at California State University, Long Beach. He is working to get his BFA in ceramics,  and he is going to graduate this semester. Nick wants to take a year off school before he starts graduate school. Nick began working with ceramics in high school, and he decided to continue working with it since he enjoyed it.

Formal Analysis

Bamford’s art is meant to be seen in the dark. The art is made up of many different items ranging from fans to shopping carts. While they are not all the same size, they are all roughly the size of an adult male. They all also have some sort of light attached to them in order for us to be able to see them in the dark. There are also many different shapes, but I saw plenty of cylinders or round objects in the art. Overall the art did not have a specific shape to them, which made them unique.

Content Analysis

Bamford’s art is make out of random things; however, it is not as random as it seems to be. Bamford makes his art out of different things because he likes to try new things. Bamford’s art is a result of experimentation. He enjoys making new art out of random things because it allows him to take random objects and transform them into a unique piece of art. This gives the random objects a new meaning. Bamford also chose to use lights because he believes that it can alter the emotions that people feel when they view his art.

Synthesis

Overall, this was a really unique exhibition. It was the first time in this class that an artist used light as part of the art. This made the experience fun because the sculptures were all lit up, and it personally made me feel like I was at a party. Some of the pieces also had moving parts, which was awesome. My favorite one was the one that had a shopping cart near the top. T thought that was funny and amazing since it was such a random thing to add. However, the other pieces were also really well done. In the end Nick Bramford is a really creative guy, and his art was one of the most unique pieces of art that I have ever seen.
